RJA #3 ENG 1020

RJA #3a: Research Topic Exploration–

Right now I have been trying to get a basic idea of the backround knowledge of SIDS and the history of it. I found a website that is pretty much the "official" website for SIDS where I will be able to document a lot of informational facts on the topic. I put this in my Delicious account and it is SIDS.org I also liked looking at Wikipedia because I know with Wikipedia that many people can post and put their input into the topic and it gives me a feel for what others think and are saying about SIDS. I also found a website for SIDSfamilies.com, which made me very sad. I think this website will help me to understand not only how many people have to face this tragidy but also what these families go through and how they cope. I think this will help give my research a more personal feel without it being my opinion.

RJA #3b: Research Topic Focus–

Brainstorming with myself and my boyfriend and mom and sister here are some of the arguments that came up. One, is SIDS something that can be cured? And by saying cured, is SIDS a disease. Can it be prevented? Will taking loose blankets, stuffed animals etc. out of cribs truly prevent a baby from dying from SIDS? Is this something in a childs genetics and does it run in families or certain races of any sorts? I mainly want my research to show backround knowledge and where in the future the studying of SIDS can take us and help lower the rate of SIDS.

RJA #3c: Research Question–

What are the different statistics on SIDS
WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF SIDS?
What amount of research and time has been put into SIDS?
Are their pre conditions to SIDS?
Do babies show any signs or do they always appear to be healthy babies?
Can their be a screening for babies to check for SIDS
Do more than just the "parent" community get involved with SIDS?
Does SIDS affect babies around the world in same average numbers?

  1. Brittany,
I am sure that this topic will be very interesting for you to research. I liked you research questions. From reading through them I assumed that your main focus question was, "What is the cause of SIDS?" I wasn't sure if you were going to touch on all the other questions listed or not, but perhaps you will have to, to be able to complete your research.

  2. I think the way you are using wikipedia is actually pretty smart as far as getting other peoples opinions on the matter. As far as taking their information seriously I probably wouldn't, only because anyone and everyone can change information, but it is a really good start to research. I always highly recommend the British Medical Journal, because its free membership to the website and they offer so many good articles for various aspects of the healthcare world. It is going to be really interesting to see the results you find, and how people are debating the issue!
